CLINICAL PRACTICUM I

COURSE SYLLABUS

Summer 04 and Fall 04

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is the practicum where MLT students practice their phlebotomy skills and become familiar with the clinical laboratory.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

A. Upon completion of this unit, the student will:

1. be familiar with specimen receiving.

2. be familiar with manual/computer receiving and reporting test results.

3. be able to locate procedures/procedure manuals in departments.

4. perform five (5) venipunctures.

5. perform three (3) fingersticks.

6. be familiar and abide to all safety rules.

B. Students will perform in a professional manner expected of a Medical Laboratory Technician as stated by the evaluation form.

SCHEDULE:

Four 8 hour days are spent in a clinical facility. Hours at hospital will vary with student's schedules and schedules of personnel at each clinical facility. One Credit Hour.

COURSE EVALUATION:

All MLT students must maintain at least a "C" (75) in their clinical courses. The grading scale will be as follows:

100 - 90 = A 79 - 75 = C Below 60 = F

89 - 80 = B 74 - 60 = D

GENERAL OBJECTIVE:

To enable the student to obtain hands-on practice with venipuncture and microsample techniques. Observation in various departments should be included.
